Alana is turning 21 about 5 weeks after recording this podcast. She's in the Air Force Guard, full duty at Sheppard AFB for tech school as a crew chief on the C-130. She also plans on going to school to be a pediatric nurse as her desire to help others is strong.
She waited two years to join the military after getting a UTI that went to her kidneys and was caught just in time - although doctors weren't sure she'd pull through. After a few days in ICU, with her fighting spirit, she did make it. After two years of waiting, she got doctor's clearance to join the military.
Alana's experiences growing up aren't foreign to many, unfortunately. Feeling left out, bullied and finding it difficult to make good friends, her self-esteem took a hit. As a result, she made poor choices dating, had suicide attempts and her reality was that she just didn't find a niche to fit in to.
Fortunately for Alana (and her family) her youngest sister inadvertently saved her final planned suicide attempt - the one that would have been successful. She gave 10 seconds for a sign that she should live. Listen to find out what it was.
And yes, Alana is now living for herself. She's found her niche, her people, and she is on her continuing journey to heal.
